Choosing your Crystals

How to Choose - If you are able to visit a crystal store, you will want to hold the crystal in the palm of your hand and see how it feels to you. You will sometimes feel a very clear "yes" or "no". If you are unsure of what you feel, put the crystal down and if you are naturally drawn back to it, then you will know that it is what you need.

If you are choosing crystals by shopping online, you can just ask Spirit to direct you to what you need. Many times the crystal in the photo will not be the exact stone you will receive. To find out if you are choosing the right crystal, just ask Spirit if you need Crystal X from Store Y. They will tell you "yes" or "no", or you will feel a prompting if the answer is yes. Then just trust that Spirit will work with the person packaging your order to make sure you get the right crystal for your energy.

Size - The size that you need will depend on the purpose of the crystal as well as the cost. For most purposes a crystal 1-1 1/2 inches (2-3 centimeters) in diameter will work just fine and a crystal that size should be quite affordable. For oil-infusions, you will need a very small sized crystal so that it can fit into the container.

If you feel drawn to purchase a larger crystal, just go with your intuition, that is the most important factor in find the best stones for you. Larger crystals are great in many areas throughout the home and can be used next to photographs and in the bath tub.

Pairing Crystals Together - The best way to find out if two or more crystals work well together is to ask intuitively and see how the response from Spirit feels. When the crystals work well together you will feel warm and may even get an energy sensation in your body. When the crystals do not work well together, your body can feel cold or even a sick feeling. If you feel nothing after you ask Spirit that question, then the crystals would not interfere with one another and they can be used together.

Each individual crystal has its own energy, so it is always a good idea to ask Spirit if you are going to be using two or more at one time. Most crystals will work well together in their natural state, but when you start using them in oil infusions or water preparations sometimes their energies do not support the common goal. For example if you are making a oil preparation for stomach problems, you can use citrine and/or carnelian, but adding upper chakra stones like lapis lazuli would work against that energy. When in doubt, stick to crystals that work on neighboring chakras, as their energies are most likely to assist each other.

Where to Find - Crystals are available at many Metaphysical bookshops, spiritual centers and gem stores. If you cannot find local resources in your area, there is a wonderful gem store in Kirkland, WA, USA that will ship crystals anywhere in the world. The store is called Earthlight Gems and the owner has a large inventory and can also fulfill special requests.

For the First Week - If with any crystal the initial energy is too strong, try carrying it for less time each day. But, usually after the first 7 to 10 days, your body starts to adjust to the energy of the crystal and any side-effects, like dizziness or sleepiness, will start to lessen. Crystals are gentle, but if you bombard your body 24 hours a day with their energy, it can create some uncomfortable cleansing effects. These cleansing effects are mostly going to be of an emotional level such as crying, or feeling anger come to the surface; but physical effect such as frequent bowel movements, vertigo, headaches, sinus draining and/or coughing are possible. These effects happen because you are releasing large amounts of energy in specific areas of your body. If at any time you are uncomfortable, just use the crystal for less time each day until your body adjusts to its energy.

Care and Cleaning - Most crystals can be rinsed in hot water to cleanse the energy of them. Muscovite and other fragile crystals that cannot be put in water, instead these can be cleansed in a bowl of salt or by being placed on a larger crystal, such as Clear Quartz.

Some crystals will naturally lose their color over time, this is a process that occurs as the crystal uses its energy. In some cases color can be restored by recharging the crystal, in some cases the discoloration is permanent. This does not diminish the properties of the crystal in any way.

Crystals have their own energetic properties that may or may not be perfectly aligned with the guidelines laid out on these pages, and it is always best to go with your intuition on the best care for each one. Another interesting thing about crystals is that they will let you know when you are done with their energy. This can happen when a crystal breaks or gets lost, or you feel compelled to pass it on to someone else. This happens because that particular crystal has done all it needed to do with your energy and it is time for new crystals that support your new energy level.
